Simple TruthMarch 05, 2015
Several years ago, I found myself in a particularly hard place in life. As I was discussing this with a friend, he offered advice that I found extremely helpful. He said, "Carrie, write down a list of a few simple truths that you can cling to and that will give you strength each day." At that point in my life, many things felt chaotic, so the idea of writing a few simple truths was extremely appealing! In my quest to find simple truths I would cling to, I went to Scripture. One of the first to make the list is one of my favorite passages, Romans 8:28.
Romans 8:28 says, "We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose." The simple truth is that this Scripture gives us assurance that God is working for our good. It doesn't mean that bad things don't or won't happen, but it does mean that I can trust that no matter what, God is always for me. The fact that God is at work is also comforting. We have a God that doesn't just sit around and watch the comings and goings of people. We have a God who walks with us and is always at work even when we're not or we can't be. Truly, if God is for me who can be against me (Romans 8:31)? These are the truths to which I cling. In this season of Lent, may we cling to the truth that God is faithful, God loves us, and God is always working for our good.
